STAX STUDIOS



La Stax Records è un’etichetta discografica americana, originariamente nata a Memphis.
Fondata nel 1957 con il nome Satellite Records, il nome Stax Records venne adottato nel 1961. Il fattore determinante di questa etichetta è la crezione del Soul del Sud e dello stile Soul di Memphis, oltre ad aver pubblicato anche dischi di gospel, funk, jazz, e blues. Pur se la Stax è rinomata per la sua “sponsorizzazione” della musica Afro Americana, l’etichetta fu fondata da 2 bianchi: Jim Stewart e sua sorella Estelle Axton.
Grandi nomi del soul e del blues hanno inciso con l’etichetta Stax, tra cui Rufus Thomas, Carla Thomas, The Mar-Keys, William Bell, The Astors, Booker T. & the MGs, Eddie Floyd, Wendy Rene, Otis Redding, The Mad Lads, Ollie & the Nightingales, Wilson Pickett, Don Covay, Sam and Dave, Albert King, Johnnie Taylor, The Bar-Kays, Ruby Johnson, Isaac Hayes, Christian Harmonizers Johnny Daye, Judy Clay, Arthur Conley

Nel 1973, Elvis Presley farà 2 session di registrazione agli Stax Studios: la prima dal 21 al 24 Luglio e la seconda dal 10 al 16 dicembre.

ELVIS SESSIONS ALLA STAX STUDIOS

21-24 Luglio 1973

Sapendo che Elvis non aveva tanta voglia di lasciare Memphis, visto anche l’imminente arrivo di sua figlia Lisa Marie, per il periodo estivo, Marthy Lacker, che in quel periodo lavorava per la Stax suggerì di registrare negli Stax Studios, che si trovavano a MacLemore Avenue, quindi a pochi minuti da Graceland e non lontana dalla vecchia chiesa Assembly of God Church, dove una volta, negli anni '50, Elvis andava con Dixie.
Forse, prendendo spunto da queste coincidenze, Felton Jarvis, il produttore di Elvis, contattò gli stessi musicisti che lavorarono con Elvis nella session agli American Studios, nel 1969 a cui unì James Burton e Ronnie Tutt.
Per Felton Jarvis, questa era una session importante, dove per poter mantenere il suo lavoro, deve assolutamente essere molto produttiva.
Sfortunatamente, la prima sera di session, Elvis non si presentò e la seconda sera arrivò molto tardi, vestito con un vestito bianco, mantello nero e in testa un cappello alla Borsalino,
accompagnato da Linda Thompson e Lisa Marie,
Elvis arrivò alla Stax Recording Studio di Memphis, nel bel mezzo della notte del 21 Luglio 1973 e le sue condizioni non erano al meglio.
Molti dei musicisti che si trovavano in studio non avevano mai visto Elvis prima e rimasero sconvolti nel vedere il suo modo di comportarsi e il suo aspetto. "Era la prima volta che lo vedevo così ingrassato" dirà Jerry Carrigan, il batterista di Nashville "Parlava in modo legato. E’ stata una cosa orribile".
Quando alle 3 del mattino la session terminò, erano stati completati tre master interi, pur se la session venne intercalata da una dimostrazione di karate con Kang Rhee
La session del 22 luglio iniziò alle 23.00 per terminare alle 3.00 del mattino e risultò essere ben poco scrupolosa.
Anche questa fu un’altra serata passata a registrare in modo discontinuo, con solo due canzoni registrate dalle 23. alle 3.30.
Il 24 luglio Elvis, deluso dal sound, quando venne a sapere che il suo microfono personale era stato rubato, uscì dallo studio.
In quella che poteva essere considerata la notte di chiusura della session, fu registrata solo una canzone, pur se l’indomani sera Felton Jarvis si presentò, portando con sè le tracce strumentali già pronte, nella vana speranza che Elvis ritorni in studio

10 - 16Dicembre 1973

La session iniziò alle 21 del 10 dicembre 1973 e, da quel giorno, ogni sera lavorarono fino alle 4.30 del mattino. Questa voltala dedizione di Elvis era completamente diversa rispetto a quella di 6 mesi prima, a luglio.
Per sopperire ad alcuni problemi tecnici avuti il mese di luglio, la RCA aveva mandato il suo camion e 4 tecnici. Ogni sera iniziavano a lavorare alle 21.00 con la band composta da James Burton, Ronnie Tutt, David Briggs e Norbert Putman. C’erano inoltre Johnny Christopher, chitarra ritmica di Memphis e lo svedese Per-Eri “Pete” Hallin (oggi pianista dei Voice) in abbinamento con David Briggs alle tastiere. Il numero dei backup singer, inclusi i Voice, arrivò ad totale di 11 voci.
Alla fine della session durata una settimana, Elvis aveva registrato 18 master, dando così al suo produttore Felton Jarvis la possibilità di presentare alla RCA un buon numero di masters. In particolare le canzoni I Got A Feeling In My Body, If You Talk In Your Sleep, Loving Arm, Talk About The Good Times e la versione rock di Promised Land diedero dimostrazione di un Elvis più in salute e più felice, rispetto a quello di luglio

Oggi la Stax è un museo che con i suoi cimeli esposti racconta la storia del soul e dei suoi artisti. Peccato che non solo anche qui non si possono fare foto, ma soprattutto di Elvis non c’è assolutamente NIENTE!!! Evidentemente e tristemente, avendo fatto qui solo una session, non lo ritengono meritevole di far parte di questo museo!!
Tra l’altro è situato in una zona di Memphis molto pericolosa e a rischio per chiunque, tanto che i taxi non amano tanto andarci e gli autobus se possono filano dritti, senza fermarsi!!!

Il Colonnello è costretto ad organizzare un altro show, che ritiene sia l’ideale per farne un album live e l’occasione perfetta, evitando così far tornare Elvis in studio

Il punto massimo del concerto è “America The Beautiful”,.
Come ogni anno, a Graceland, erano stati programmati i festeggiamenti per il 4 luglio, ma lo spirito di Elvis è molto lontano dall’essere festoso, perciò il party e i fuochi artificiali programmati per dopo lo spettacolo vengono annullati.
